The Perioikoi were a group of people in ancient Sparta, a city-state in ancient Greece. The term "Perioikoi" (singular: "Perioikos") translates to "dwellers-around" or "dwellers nearby." They were a distinct social class in Spartan society, occupying a unique position between the two main social classes of Sparta: the Spartiates (full citizens) and the Helots (serfs or slaves).
